Cowboy Copper Hair Is Trending and an Expert Told Me All About It

The copper hair trend is back, but this year, it's had a rebrand. Say hello to "cowboy copper" hair. Thanks to TikTok, this hair color is set to be everywhere this season, with the hashtag #cowboycopperhair racking up a cool 4.7 million views and counting. If you're not yet familiar with this autumn hair trend, then you've come to the right place, as I spoke to Emma Vickery, creative director at Percy & Reed, to get all the information you could ever need and more.

Not only that, but I asked Vickery exactly how to make this color work for each of us, as we know that when it comes to beauty and hair trends, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach. In fact, sometimes these TikTok terms can feel quite exclusionary, but here at Who What Wear UK, we're all about making beauty fun and accessible for everyone. So, if you want to give the cowboy copper hair trend a go, keep on scrolling…

What Is the Cowboy Copper Hair Trend?

First things first, what on earth is "cowboy" copper? "This hair color is the fusion of leather tones [hence, 'cowboy'] with classic redhead shades," explains Vickery. "Coined 'cowboy copper', this shade delves slightly deeper into brunette undertones whilst being infused with the richness of deep copper accents. This stands in contrast to the conventional golden hues, resembling a harmonious blend of brunette and redhead aesthetics."

How to Make the Trend Work for Your Skin Tone

Does cowboy copper work for everyone? For those with darker skin tones, Vickery says that this color trend is a highly complementary option. "Its subdued vibrancy embraces a luscious, buttery caramel tone, steering clear of orange or peach hues, resulting in a captivating effect on deeper skin tones," she says.

I love how these lighter, caramel colors that frame the face shine in the sunlight.

This hair has a glossy finish that helps to bring out the brunette and copper tones.

"If you have olive skin, you'll find a sweet spot with richer, golden-red caramel tones," says Vickery. This color is reminiscent of an auburn shade.

Auburn-colored hair can look so good with pink, orange and red tones in your clothes and accessories.

Have you ever seen such an incredible head of hair? The blend of golden-red and caramel tones is just beautiful.

Vickery says that individuals with fairer skin tones are better suited to a more classic copper shade. "This variation harmonizes with their complexion, brightening light-colored eyes while giving a radiant glow to the skin."

This is classic copper hair at its finest.

You can really tell that this hair color has been tailored to the client, as it suits her skin tone perfectly.

Products to Care for Your Cowboy Copper Hair

"Hydrate your hair from within and without—sip on water and indulge in hydrating products," says Vickery, as moisture is magic when it comes to copper hair. For a hydrating shampoo and conditioner duo, I recommend this pair from Pureology.

It's important not to forget about your scalp either, and I love using serums to keep mine healthy. Dedicated scalp products "nurture natural sebum flow, invigorate follicle circulation and channel nutrients for vibrant locks," says Vickery.

"Unleash an extra layer of protection by opting for protein-packed products," says Vickery. My choice? This mask from Kerastase.

If you want a shiny finish, try a conditioning hair gloss like this one from Glaze. It looks like the perfect cowboy copper shade to me.
